Recent Reads | legendborn, 5 star reads, and dislikes

Do you ever read so many amazing books but really only recommend like 2 or 3 of those books all the time?? I find that recently I have read a lot of great books BUT when it comes to telling people what books they should read or posting on my IG… I tend to focus on just a couple of them!

I mean, its not possible to talk about like 100 books at once but I really need to throw some of my favs out there more often! So during my post today, I am going to share some of my top favs from my most RECENT reads!

I would love to hear about your fav reads too!! Share with me in the comments 🙂

ALSO!! I am including my own pictures in this post (I don’t know why I haven’t done this in the past??). Anyways, if you’d like hit me up on IG: thecomfyreader 🙂

Legendborn – ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ OKAY so Legendborn was so amazing! I would say that this is probably my all time fav for 2020. I know… like who am I just deciding on ONE BOOK??? I don’t even know. However, I will say that I was very surprised by this book and loved every second of it. I received this ARC from a Goodreads giveaway and wow am I happy I did!!!

What I loved:

First off… this is a King Arthur retelling WHICH MEANS, I obviously loved it! The characters in this story were very relatable and I felt that each character had a purpose. All the main characters have a solid story line and I felt like they developed well.

I think Sel was my fav character. SEL ❤ – if you know, you know.

The magical elements were well done. I want to say this gave me some HP vibes mixed in with Hunger Games. There are trials the characters need to go through and then with the added magic and school based setting, it was just overall really good!

The Black culture represented in this story was so amazing. There was talk about history, racism, slavery… I felt that it was done tastefully and educationally. It added a special element to the book, especially because this story centers around King Arthur and the Round Table (all white men doing their white men things, ya know?).

What I didn’t like:

NOTHING IT WAS ALL GOOD

Clap When You Land – ⭐⭐⭐⭐ This was such a different style of book than I normally read! I was not 100% sold on it being written in verse but once I started reading it I was really into it!

What I loved:

The characters were so well written and I felt that I knew them personally. I loved the story about the father and his hidden lives. I felt the story was overall really touching and while the focus of the story was actually quite sad, the story turned out to be hopeful!

What I didn’t like:

There was no info on the girls after they found each other and go on with life… I kind of wish we would have seen them being sisters and seeing how that relationship grew. So much time was spent on the past and the father and the negative feelings… I just didn’t get what I wanted from the ending!

Get A Life, Chloe Brown – ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ If you have read this then you probably feel like me and wonder where the heck Chloe Brown has been all my life?? This was such an unexpectedly fun story!

What I loved:

Chronic pain representation is huge in this story which is not a norm in stories and I really enjoyed it! I found Chloe’s character to be refreshing and new. The “real life” feel of this story was relatable. I loved how Red’s character comes across and this rugged and “manly” character with no feelings but as we get to know him we also learn his insecurities. Therapy is made normal in the story! I just feel this book took some many normal things that are never talked about and put them on full display!

What I didn’t like:

Not much….. the only thing is Chloe’s mom lol I found her to be too much and I just felt so cringy reading her parts!

Throwaway Girls – ⭐⭐⭐⭐ This feels like its going to be an underrated book. I read it from Netgalley and let me tell you – this gets to the real societal issues around women, drug use, and low-economic status. Its a good read that gets you thinking and takes you on a hell of a ride!

What I loved:

The story has some real depth to it. The story is about finding a missing girl. However, there are lots of other missing girls that no one is looking for because of their families, upbringings, class… I found the writing to be well done and the mystery around the missing girl is WOW. I didn’t see the ending coming and like damn, its not an easy ending but its real.

What I didn’t like:

I was a little confused with the flipping back and forth between characters. You don’t find out until the end of the book who the 2nd perspective even is. I had my guesses but still it is unclear and part of the mystery unfolding. It wasn’t bad but it just added a little confusion.

Big Summer – ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Typical me goes into a book without actually knowing anything about it! I just saw it on IG and everyone was saying it was good and then next thing you know my BF bought it for me so I was like yup okay Ill read this! Its great though so yay!

What I loved:

Everything. The story was amazing! A plus sized IG influencer who is a strong and independent woman? Yes please! Also, I liked the friendship aspect of the book. The whole losing a friend because of a falling out but then coming back together is something people experience everyday! ALSO, its a murder mystery so like that was great! The mystery was well done. Some people say they knew the “bad guy” right away but I sure didn’t!

What I didn’t like:

Nothing, I really enjoyed it!!

The Paris Model – ⭐⭐⭐⭐ I am a sucker for historical fiction so when I saw this I knew I needed to read it! I am not a huge fashion person but I have to say that I try to be somewhat fashionable and I do like following the trends. This book was such a fun historical fiction with a lot of unexpected elements!

What I loved:

Christian Dior! How cool is it that the main character is a model in Paris for Christian Dior just after WW2 when he was basically the God of fashion! I loved all the fashion parts because it was interesting imagining what life would be like during that time. Also, I liked the family drama that Grace was dealing with from overseas. And of course, the spy/undercover story line that occurs as well. I just got so many different things from this story!! It was fab!

What I didn’t like:

There is mention of rape and unpleasant sexual experiences. I found these parts to be uncomfortable and I kind of wish they were not included (but I do also see the relevance to them so its fine but yeah, could be a negative factor for some).

Recent Reads | Royals, Second Chances, and Other Thoughts

Hey everyone! I hope you are all well and have been doing some fabulous reading lately!! I have been somewhat struggling with my reading but I’m hoping that July will bring more motivation for me!

If you saw my monthly wrap up for June you would know I did okay with my reading. Not amazing, but honestly pretty average for me! How many books do you read in a month?

So like last time, I am going to do a little update about what I’ve been reading lately. Lets start with what I have recently finished!

I just finished The Heir Affair a couple days ago!

I absolutely loved this book. I will post a review for it soon but for now let me just tell you that this book did not disappoint! The drama was wild and just as good as the first book (The Royal We)! I received this book for a Goodreads giveaway!

I hadn’t read The Royal We before and then when I realized The Heir Affair was actually the 2nd book I was like oops better read the first one LOL. I quickly bought The Royal We on my Kobo and read it within I think 2 days. I was amazed how long The Royal We was… like it was a BIG ONE YOU GUYS!! Anyways, it was so fab that I plowed through out regardless of size. I pretty much immediately picked up The Heir Affair (also quite large) and read that one within the week.

I think these 2 books were really interesting in the sense that you get a snap shot into what it might be like being royal with today’s media! A lot of the drama is media drama and just how people make up these headlines about them or twist the truths. Also how the public can be SO MEAN and rip these people apart when they don’t even know them?!?!? I know this is a fictional book but it does make you think what it must really be like!

If you like the royals, specifically Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, then you will love these 2 books! I don’t know if they will write another one but I hope they do lol.

I also recently finished The Second Chance Hotel by Rachel Dove

Again, I will have a review for this one soon but just a little overview of it… a woman divorces her husband and decides to get a fresh start. She packs everything she owns into her car and drives off to a hotel she used to visit as a child. Little plot twist here… she actually BUYS the hotel and spruces it up to get it up and running again. She of course makes new friends and meets a guy… wonder what happens there?? Lol.

This was a predicable story but cute! It was also short so definitely a good one if you want a fast read that will make you smile!

My current reads… this is a little up in the air right now lol. I have started a Netgalley book – Bookish and the Beast.

When I say I’ve started it I mean I’ve read about 3 pages lol. It has been sitting on my list for a bit and I know I need to read it AND I am excited to read it but just feeling a little uninterested in reading at the moment. I’m sure once I read a couple chapters I will be hooked… I mean who doesn’t like a fairy-tale retelling??

I usually read 2 books at once but I honestly don’t know what book I will pick to read alongside!! So right now I will give you the couple options I’m trying to decide between:

  • The Unhoneymooners
  • The Guest List
  • Darling Rose Gold

Struggling to pick one…. maybe someone can help me decide?? What should I read?

Well that is all for today everyone! Hope you enjoyed my little reading update and my thoughts!!

What are you reading right now? Do you plan a monthly tbr or just go with the flow?

Recent Reads | Veronica Roth, Hunger Games, and Other Thoughts

Hello friends, hope you all had a great weekend and were able to read lots and just relax! The state of the world is honestly unbelievable and I feel so deeply for everyone right now.

In other bookish news – I have been getting a decent amount of reading done and I’m feeling happy about that! So I wanted to start doing a recent reads blog post every couple weeks just to give an update on what I’m reading and my thoughts. I love doing WWW Wednesday but I want to get a little deeper into the recent reads than just list them! So, I’m going to give this a go and see how it goes!! Let me know if this is an idea you like? I see others doing weekly reading wrap ups and whatnot but I don’t think I read fast enough to do it weekly. We will see though!!

So, first off, I have recently finished Chosen Ones by Veronica Roth.

I LOVED Veronica Roth ever since Divergent.. I feel like that is like everyone else 😂 I’m definitely not a unique opinion when it comes to that LOL but I loved her writing style and loved the story. Since then I know she has come out with other books like Carve the Mark and the sequal to Carve the Mark (cannot remember the name right now). BUT for some reason I didn’t pick those ones up? Like what the heck Deanna? Anyways, they are on my long long list of books I should read one day. Will I get to them? That is a the age old mystery that I do not know the answer to!! All I can say is, I like Veronica Roth and I hope to get to those books sometime soon.

So, to Chosen Ones! I have a full review to post so Ill just go into it a little bit here. The book follows 5 characters called the “chosen ones” who are picked based on a prophecy that states the “dark one” will destroy the world. They go through this whole war with the dark one and you find out the dark one was DEFEATED. Now, that is NOT a spoiler (it is in the synopsis). The book then starts in the present and the reader finds out about the dark one and the war through flashbacks and other means of the characters going into the past! The characters are then taken on a new adventure when a new “dark one” (actually the same dark one) comes around and they have to save the world AGAIN. Obviously!

This book is entertaining. There is some magic, action, YA romance, zombies even make an appearance! There is also some sci-fi aspects to the story that I really enjoyed! Overall, it was a good read.

I am reading two books right now – Treasure Island by Robert Louis Stevenson & The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes by Suzanne Collins.

Treasure Island is my 2nd ever classic. The only other classic I have read was Pride and Prejudice in college and to be honest…. I did not like it. Don’t @ me 😂 I know, its an unpopular opinion BUT I just did not enjoy the book and I felt forced to read it which made it so much worse.

However, I’m feeling different about Treasure Island. Its a little hard to read I wont lie. The English is very old!! Like the book was published in the 1800’s and that is what the English is like. SO I’m having a hard time with that a bit. The story itself though is entertaining. I like the adventure and the pirates! I’m at the part where they get to the island and some of the crew gets off the ship and some stays! Some murder ensues on the island and now I’m feeling SUPER sketchy about some of the characters!

So that is that! Will update you more when I get further in the book 😊

The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes is so far so good! I’m about 100 pages in and I’m happy with the story. I never liked President Snow in the other Hunger Games books but I’m liking this take on his character. Basically if you don’t already know – this book is a prequel to the Hunger Games series. It follows President Snow, before he is President, when he is still a kid and the Hunger Games are only 10 years in. He is a mentor to a tribute and basically it goes from there!

I wont lie to you.. I didn’t want to read this book when I first heard about it. It was all over the internet, people were freaking out, fan girling all over again for this book franchise! I LOVED the Hunger Games and also the movies when they came out. I was all for Gale and didn’t want Katniss and Peeta to be together, I was THAT girl 😂 but, I felt that I left the Hunger Games in the past. I read the stories when I was in high school and while I loved them and they were a turning point for my reading life, I just didn’t want to bring it back. If that makes sense. Anyone else feel that way?

HOWEVER, I will say that the more I saw it on IG, the more I needed to be on that hype train with everyone else. Then, on this past weekend, my parents stopped by my house and what did they bring you may ask??? THEY BROUGHT THE BALLAD OF SONGBIRDS AND SNAKES. This is where my journey on the hype train began! Thanks mom and dad!

The story is fab so far. Loving it! The book is large and so I feel it will take me some time to get through but you know what? I’m cool with it. Ill ride this train for a while and when I have more solid thoughts and feelings about this (because like I said, I’m only about 100 pages in) I will let you all know!

My last reading update is what I am hoping to read next but am unsure about.

I will for sure be picking up a Netgalley title because as you guys know I have about 10 books waiting for me on there LOL. I’m thinking I will pick up The Second Chance Hotel by Rachel Dove. It looks so cute and I just want to read some more fluffy books after I finish my current reads (or even during… maybe Ill try to read 3 books at once?) 🤷‍♀️

I also bought the whole series of Harry Potter books and LET ME TELL YOU I’m excited!! I wanted to start them the second they showed up at my house but I didn’t because I just cant drop a book I’m reading half way through, it feels WRONG. I am hoping to get to Harry Potter and the whole wizarding world soon but I also am torn because a part of me feels that Harry Potter should be read in the Fall/Winter. What do you guys think??

Well that’s all for today folks! That was more in depth than my WWW Wednesday and it was more fun to get some thoughts out about what I’m reading instead of just telling you all the titles with no real updates.

Let me know what you think of this post in the comments below. Do you like it? Is it too long? Do you simply not care about what I’m reading? I need to know so please tell all 😊

Stay safe out there everyone and talk soon!
