Top 10 Tuesday – Favourite Opening Lines

Hi friends!! I found another Top 10 Tuesday prompt that I am totally all for!! I saw this one and I knew I needed to do it because it seemed so fun!

I feel like I should be writing more in this intro but I just have NOTHING to say today lol does anyone else have days like that?? So, just ignore my weird anti-socialness today and read my Top 10 Tuesday instead 😂

Top Ten Tuesday is an original blog meme created by The Broke and the Bookish and is currently being hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl

The prompt is…….. Top 10 Opening Lines. I just added “favourite opening lines” because I’m sure there are some really iconic opening lines but I wanted to just share the ones I’ve read and enjoyed 😊

Verity – “I hear the crack of his skull before the splattering of blood reaches me”

I like this one because its SO in your face. I remember reading this opening line and I actually paused and thought like what the heck am I getting myself into if this is the FIRST LINE OF THE BOOK!!

The Little Bookshop of Love Stories – “It is a truth universally acknolweged that today is the Mondayest Monday ever”

This first line isn’t anything as gripping as the first one I shared haha. I just love how real and cute this line is. I love that type of writing so I just knew I was getting into something cute and quirky!

Gone – “One minute the teacher was talking about the Civil War. And the next minute he was gone. There. Gone”

I’m not sure if any of you have read the Gone series? It is centered around the idea that all the adults just vanish and only kids are left! So, I was excited to read that the questions and suspense start right at the beginning!!

The Grave Keepers – “You should know that I died a long time ago, and that I was young when I died”

This first line made go “whaaaat” right away haha I guess it kind of confused me because I thought the book was about 2 girls who were very much alive. It caught me off guard but then I found out the person at the beginning was in fact, dead, and not one of the main characters! It definitely made me want to read on to find out more!

Josh and Hazel’s Guide to Not Dating – “Anyone who knew me in college might be horrified to hear that I ended up employed as an elementary school teacher, responsible for educating our wide-eyed, sponge-brained youth, but in truth, I suspect I’m pretty great at it”

This just made me laugh! We all know someone who became a teacher a you went “oh that wont be good” LOL so this just reminded me of that!!

42867787

The Widow of Pale Harbor – “This was the fourth dead raven to appear on Sophronia Carver’s front path in as many weeks, and there was no explaining it away as coincidence this time”

I like this first line because its perfectly intriguing. It doesn’t give any information about the character or the story and doesn’t just start in full blown chaos. Its just enough to make you wonder whats happening and also gives some spooky undertones!

32969999

A Semi-Definitive List of Worst Nightmares – “Esther Solar has been waiting outside Lilac Hill Nursing and Rehabilitation Center for half an hour when she received word that the curse has struck again.”

CURSE? This is the perfect opening line!! It has me asking “what curse” and just needing to read more. Its kind of sinister in a way but also could mean anything so its just a really good hook!

36099465

The Academy – “I’m reading Vogue one night in my bedroom when there’s a knock on the door, four hard ones in rapid succession: the code knock that means Emergency!OpemThisDoorRightNow!”

I love this! Its such a good mix of weird haha – person reading Vouge but then has code knocks. Who is this person??

How to Hang A Witch – “Like most fast-talking, opinionated New Yorkers, I have an affinity for sarcasm”

This line is witty! I like when things start off and you know the type of humor you’ll be working with during the book!

The Anatomy Of A Murderer – “Almost a year after Franklin Kettle shot my friend Pete Lund through the head, a squad of cops took Franklin to my mom’s lab so she could put a hole in his head and slide a small electronic capsule inside”

As if the title of the book wasn’t catchy enough – the first line just gets you!! So right away you’re like okay, someone was murdered…. and then WOW so much talk of holes in peoples heads!

What do you think? Are these good opening lines? Do you enjoy any of these ones?
